EI beneficiaries down again in February

5th consecutive monthly decrease in number of people receiving benefits

In February, the number of people receiving employment insurance (EI) benefits dropped 1.3 per cent from January, according to Statistics Canada.

There were 628,900 people receiving benefits in February, down 8,300 from January. The decrease marks the fifth consecutive monthly decrease.

Beneficiaries declined in every province except Prince Edward Island, which saw a 0.1 per cent increase in beneficiaries.

Saskatchewan saw a decrease in beneficiaries of 5.1 per cent, the fastest rate of monthly decline of all the provinces.

The number initial and renewal claims also declined in February, down 1.1 per cent from January.
