80 per cent of Canadians filing online: Government

Increase of 6 per cent over last year

Eighty per cent of Canadians filed their income tax return electronically this year — an increase of six per cent over last year, according to Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, minister of national revenue.

As of July 2, 2014, more than 21-million Canadians took advantage of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) electronic filing services, up from 20 million this time last year. Almost seven million people (26 per cent) used NETFILE while about 14 million (54 per cent) used EFILE and 5.5 million (20 per cent) used paper filing, said the government.

This year, 54 per cent of taxpayers also received their refund by direct deposit. And the average refund for the 2013 taxation year was $1,655 — up from $1,646 in the 2012 tax year, said Findlay.
