Quebec provincial park staff back on job after one-day strike over wages

Workers currently make $14 per hour average, want 2 per cent annual increase

About 700 Quebec provincial park employees are back on the job after striking for one day on Oct. 12.

Management and staff haven't reached an agreement on a new contract but they are planning to meet early this week.

Wages are the key issue in negotiations, according to the workers’ union, syndicat de la fonction publique et parapublique du Québec (SFPQ).

The Quebec government has offered a four per cent wage hike to be spread out over four years. However, SFPQ is asking for a two per cent annual wage increase over the four years, or an income raise that goes up at least as much as inflation.

Employees in Quebec's provincial park system make an average of $14 an hour.
