CRA announces relief for businesses affected by Alberta floods

Aug. 2 deadline set for federal business, other returns

Businesses and taxpayers affected by flooding in Alberta have been given an extension to file returns by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue, said the deadline for all federal business and other returns that were due during the flooding has been pushed back to Aug. 2. A federal business return filed by that date will be considered to be filed on time.

"Many Albertans are struggling during these devastating floods, and our government is here to extend our support in any way we can," said Shea. "We hope that extending the filing deadline eases some of the burden of these difficult times."

Businesses are reminded that taxpayer relief provisions are also available for those who are unable to meet their tax obligations due to the flooding.

For this situation, the CRA is offering to expedite taxpayer relief requests through its business enquiries line at (800) 959-5525 or its general enquiries line at (800) 959-8281.

Taxpayer relief requests can also be made in writing using Form RC4288, Request for Taxpayer Relief. Requests for taxpayer relief are considered by the CRA on a case-by-case basis.

Businesses are also reminded that if they are unable to physically access the institutions they normally depend on for payments and remittances, the CRA's e-services can provide access to tax payment services and account information.
