P.E.I. nurses to receive 2.5 per cent wage increase

One per cent increase retroactive to April, 2010, and the rest effective Dec. 1, 2010.

Nurses in Prince Edward Island are getting a 2.5 per cent wage increase, following a decision released by arbitrator John McEvoy.

The P.E.I. Nurses Union and the province's Department of Health and Wellness were engaged in a labour dispute and failed to come to an agreement through collective bargaining. Arbitrator John McEvoy was appointed to make a ruling when parties proceeded to arbitration on Dec. 3, 2010.

"We are very pleased that arbitrator McEvoy listened to the overwhelming evidence indicating that salaries of our members must be kept within reach of RN salaries in neighboring provinces," said union president Mona O'Shea.

The 2.5 per cent increase will come in two stages: a one per cent increase retroactive to April of 2010, and the rest effective Dec. 1, 2010. Nurses will receive their retroactive payments in the new year.

The current contract concludes in March 2011. The union said it will commence negotiations for the new contract in the spring.
